Castle Batch Primary School at Kingsmour Playground

A Day in the Life of the Playground

The day dawned with rain showers which did not augur well for a visit to Kingsmour Playground.

Castle Batch Primary School Speech and Language Base were due to spend a day with us as an end of term treat.

The rain stopped and I went down to the Playground to greet our visitors. When I arrived, I met a young mum being shown around by one of the organisations which works with families with children with special needs. She was clearly impressed with the facilities available and will become a member in order to use the Playground. As so many families tell us, ordinary public playgrounds really do not provide facilities for children such as hers and she feels uncomfortable in the judgmental attitudes of some people.

The sun came out and at 10am two minibuses arrived with 18 children and several staff and helpers.

During the course of the next four hours, a very happy group of children explored and used all of our toys and equipment in a safe and secure environment. If enjoyment could be measured in decibels of laughter and squeals of delight, then this day out was a clear success.

Four hours later, as clouds started to dim the sun, it was time to leave. A very well-behaved group of young children helped to tidy up and lined up to say thank you and goodbye. All wanted to come back again. One young boy asked if I lived at the Playground. He said that he would like to come and live
in our playhouse.

As a happy group of children boarded their minibuses, a young mum arrived with two young
children (as she does on most days). She comes because she likes the safe environment and
her son can enjoy the toys (his sister is still a baby). She says no one makes judgments here.
