Bailey's Story

The proceeds from the Yeo Valley Lions’ Strawberry Lion Walk in May were awarded to Yatton Girl guiding, who have supported this event from its inception and this year collected £2200 in sponsorship. Of this amount, £500 was collected by one Guide, 10-year-old Bailey Carey who lives in Yatton and is in her first year with the Guides. The Lions Club recognised this achievement by awarding her with a Certificate of Appreciation.

So how did Bailey raise this remarkable figure? Having spoken to her dad Ben, it seems Bailey has access to a wide network of family and friends which she put it to good use!

Bailey received her certificate at the Yeo Valley Lions Club’s Presentation Evening at Claverham Village Hall in September. Proceeds from their Beer Festival in June were presented to local charities: Weston HospiceCare, Great Western Air Ambulance, 1st Congresbury Brownies, Spotlight Sparklers, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Barton Camp and Blood Bikes, who all received £500 each.

Barton Camp is situated in the Mendips near Winscombe and was purchased many years ago by a benefactor for the use and benefit of under-privileged children from Bristol. It still caters for children who can stay there and take part in the various activities. Spotlight Sparklers are based at Yatton Primary School and comprises three choirs from different age groups, all run by their music teacher, Alison Francis Black. Alison started with her first choir some years ago and established a link with Lions by bringing the choir to sing at their outdoor carol concert, held every year in the shopping Precinct in Yatton on the Saturday before Christmas. Their donation will go to cover transport costs when the choirs travel to different venues.
